What happens during application
Trim first. Size carefully. Apply only to healthy claws.
The cap needs enough claw surface to adhere while leaving room for normal claw growth and shedding.
Trim to an appropriate length
The claw is shortened before application; caps do not eliminate the need for trimming.
Select and test the fit
The cap should cover the tip without crowding the base or interfering with normal movement.
Apply and monitor
Caps shed with the outer claw sheath over time and need periodic replacement.
When guardians consider nail caps

Scratching is normal feline behavior. Caps may help reduce damage or accidental scratches while other environmental and behavioral supports are put in place.

Some households use caps to reduce accidental injury to people with delicate skin or medical vulnerability.
Inter-cat contact
Caps may reduce scratch injury in selected multi-cat situations, but they do not resolve fear, conflict, pain, or unsafe introductions.
After application
Expect some grooming and investigation.
A cat may lick or inspect the caps initially. Observe for persistent chewing, distress, swelling, redness, or a cap that appears trapped or incorrectly positioned.
What nail caps do not replace
Keep the larger care question visible.
A cap addresses the sharp end of the claw. It does not diagnose pain, change social dynamics, or provide environmental enrichment.
- Regular claw checks
Caps still need monitoring as the claw grows and the outer sheath sheds.
- Appropriate scratching surfaces
Provide stable vertical and horizontal options in locations the cat already uses.
- Behavioral and medical assessment
New aggression, conflict, pain, or sudden scratching changes may need a different evaluation.
- Careful removal or replacement
Do not pull off attached caps. Allow normal shedding or obtain professional guidance.
